Why 20 somethings should care about their hormones.

Hey girlfriend, let's get real for a minute. Have you not felt like yourself lately? Your brain is foggy, your constantly hungry, you are always hot and extremely exhausted? Hormones are not just your mothers issue. They can affect women of any age. They are one of the most important regulatory systems in the human body. They are synthesized chemicals that act as messengers and are designed to interact with specific targeted cells which provoke a change or result in your body. These chemicals are secreted directly in the bloodstream so the blood can carry them to organs and tissues of the body to exert their functions.
While it may not seem like a big deal, your hormones really do play a large role in the daily goings on of your body, and shouldn't be ignored. Everything from digestion, healing from wounds, bowel movements, sleeping, heartbeat, mood, focus, to name a few. Many issues that seem like just part of being young are actually a hormone imbalance that if fixed would lead to you looking and feeling your best.
Some symptoms you might be experiencing if your hormones are out of balance are
Recurring infections (Yeast or UTI)
Foggy brain or unable to concentrate
Many women especially younger women don't realize their symptoms are related to their hormones so therefore don't do anything about it OR they visit their doctor only to be dealt a prescription treating the symptoms and never getting down to the root cause. I believe this can also contribute to infertility, autoimmune diseases and early onset menopause later in life if not balanced when the problem first arrises.
The good news is there are SO many simple things you can do in your daily life to make sure your hormones get back into balance and stay that way for life.

The PUZZLE method is about making sure all the pieces fit together so your body is in balance and is working at its optimal level and you not only look and feel your best but also are free from disease and illness and live a long and happy life.
1. Proper Nutrition- What you eat and don't eat is probably the most important thing when it comes to balancing your hormones. Eating a diet high in vegetables, lean protein, fruit, healthy fats and fiber and staying away from anything processed, high in sugar or vegetable oils will keep your hormones balanced and working at optimal levels.

3. Zapping Stress- Reducing stress is probably one of the best things you can do for balancing your hormones. When reacting to stressors, the body releases hormones such as cortisol, which is known to impact the immune system, digestive system, skin and more. Being in a constant state of stress will cause the body to shut down all normal functioning and will lead to you feeling tired, irritable, and just plain unhappy. Incorporating deep breathing, meditation and relaxing activities into your daily life will help you zap your stress and feel better in no time.
4. Zzzzzz's- Sleep is another SUPER important piece to this puzzle. During sleep your body is repairing, rejuvenating, detoxing, and healing just to name a few. Your body needs sleep to function so making sure you are getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night which will have it running its absolute best. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to illness, disease, weight gain, acne, and headaches. Studies show that people who are sleep deprived are 5 times more likely to develop depression and anxiety than their well rested friends. To start getting quality sleep today, implement a power down hour before bed, make sure your bedroom is dark and cool and remove all electronics.
5. Love and Support- Having a loving and supportive tribe is also super important when it comes to living the highest quality of life you can. Having loving and supportive friendships help you by helping you live longer, heal quicker, feel less pain, have stronger muscles, and have a stronger heart. What a coincidence that love can make your heart stronger. Invest in your friendships, hug your family, call a co-worker and tell them you appreciate them. Investing in these type of relationships is good for your health and theirs.
6, Exercise- Physical exercise is not only good for how you look but for making you feel your best. Exercise is not only important for making you look your best but it also increases your endorphins, regulates your estrogen (primary sex hormone), regulates cortisol (mood, motivation and fear response), improves insulin sensitivity (controls weight gain), and stimulates production of testosterone (Hormone responsible for muscle growth and maintenance, increasing metabolism, and boosting overall confidence). Moderate exercise 3-4 times a week is highly recommended to round out the hormone puzzle.
Even if having a baby is the last thing on your radar, having optimal hormones should be. “Reproductive health is your health, and maintaining it isn’t any different than exercising or eating a healthy diet,” explains Jaclyn Tolentino, D.O., a holistic medicine doctor. “Even if pregnancy isn’t on your radar right now, when you’re in your 20s, your body is still trying to function as if it’s capable of producing healthy offspring.”
Applying these tips to your everyday life until they become habits will have you looking and feeling your best and have your body functioning the way it is supposed to no matter what your age.
